If you own a space that sits empty part of the week, you have probably wondered whether you could earn renting your space for shoots. Brands, podcasters and production teams across India book somewhere to shoot every day, and most of what they book is not a purpose-built studio. It is a flat with good light. A rooftop at golden hour. A café before opening hours.
So what does it pay? It depends more on how often you get booked than on your hourly rate, and anyone quoting you a guaranteed monthly figure is guessing. What follows is real market rates by space type, what moves the number, and the arithmetic so you can run it yourself.
Most of what gets booked is not a studio at all. It is somebody's living room with a sofa, a window and enough space to put a tripod down. You are renting usable room and daylight, not gear you do not own.
What determines how much you earn
City and locality is the biggest multiplier. Studios in South Delhi or Andheri go for ₹2,000–3,000 per hour, while equivalent spaces in Noida, non-premium Gurugram or Pune sit at ₹1,200–2,000 — a 30–50% swing between neighbourhoods, per published Indian studio rate guides for 2026. Tier-2 cities go lower again.
Space type and what is included. A room with lights and backdrops commands more than an empty one, because the renter is not hiring gear separately.
Size and look. Ceiling height, window light, and how "dressed" the space already is. A room that looks like a set saves hours of art direction, and renters pay for that.
How bookable you make it. Amenities, open weekend slots and good photographs are not cosmetic — they decide whether a producer shortlists you at all. More on each below.
Earnings by space type
These are market rates from published Indian sources, not wenuru averages. Treat them as the range your space sits somewhere inside.
Photo studios. Published 2026 rate guides put these in four tiers: a bare space with natural light and no gear runs ₹500–1,200 per hour; a standard equipped studio ₹1,000–2,500; a multi-set creative studio ₹1,500–3,500; a premium production studio ₹3,000–8,000. Full-day bookings commonly go at a 20–35% discount to the hourly rate.
Podcast and video studios. In Mumbai, published rate cards put hourly rentals at ₹1,200–2,500, with basic setups at ₹800–1,500 and high-end rooms at ₹2,500 and above. The two podcast studios currently live on wenuru list starting rates of ₹3,000 and ₹4,500 per hour — real listings, though two is far too small a sample to call a market rate.
Flats, rooftops, cafés and offices. Hourly rates for everyday spaces used as shoot locations are not well published in India, so we are not going to invent one. What is documented is the wider band for property used in film and TV shoots: Indian location-scouting services put owner earnings at ₹10,000 to ₹2,00,000 and upward per day, depending on the property, its proximity to a filming hub, crew size, and how much the production wants to alter the space.
Farmhouses, villas and bungalows. These trade by the day. A furnished shooting bungalow near Chennai is listed at ₹30,000 per day for film and TV work.
How much could you make in a month?
Your hourly rate is the easy half. Utilisation is the half nobody can promise you.
The arithmetic: a space listed at ₹2,000 per hour — inside the standard-equipped band above — earns ₹8,000 at four booked hours a month, ₹24,000 at twelve, and ₹60,000 at thirty.
Which tells you where to put your effort: another ₹200 on your hourly rate is worth far less than two more bookings a month.
How to maximise your earnings
Photograph the space properly. Six bright, wide, honest photographs, shot mid-morning with your actual lights on. Include the entrance, the washroom and the parking — the unglamorous shots that answer a producer's real questions.
Price against your locality, not your city. Benchmark against spaces a few kilometres away, not the citywide average.
Bundle what you already own. A room at ₹2,500 an hour including lights and a backdrop is better value than a bare one at ₹1,200 whose renter then hires gear at ₹1,500–3,000 a day. Including what you have lets you charge more and win more bookings at once.
Offer a day rate. Full days go at a 20–35% discount for a reason — they are far less work than stacking hourly slots.
Open more slots, especially weekends — availability you do not publish is income you do not earn — and reply fast. Shoot planning happens on short notice, and a reply within the hour often wins the booking on its own.
List every amenity. Power backup, AC, a washroom, a lift, parking for a tempo. Production teams filter on these, so an unlisted amenity earns you nothing.
